Can I use it as a voice tuner?

Yes. Sing and hold a note: the readout shows which note you’re closest to and how many cents off you are. To see a whole phrase instead of one note, use the Pitch Diagram.

Can I tune to A = 442 Hz?

The web tuner uses A4 = 440 Hz. In the iOS and Android apps you can set your own reference, and the tuner there is free.

What the readout gives you

Tuning is the quick part. Staying in tune is what the graph beside the readout is for.

The readout averages the last few readings so it doesn’t twitch. The trace next to it draws every raw reading, so you still see the note settle.

A needle only describes this instant. The scrolling history shows whether a fresh string held or slid flat over the next few seconds.

Step by step

How to tune

1. Play one string and let it ring.
Pluck or bow firmly once, rather than repeatedly.
2. Turn the peg until it reads 0 cents.
Below zero is flat, above is sharp. Come up to the note from below, so the string stays put.
3. Let it ring a few seconds longer.
If the line drifts flat, the string is still stretching. Tune it once more.
